FAQ For animal rescuers

  • First thing is to check for a collar, a tag with any information to try and reunite the animal with its owner.
  • Depending upon the location the animal is found, knock on a few doors and see if anyone recognizes the animal as someone’s pet from that area.
  • Check the following social media FaceBook groups to see if someone has posted a lost animal
  • Take the animal to a veterinarian and do a health check – Parvo, distemper and Giardia are very common highly contagious diseases, particularly in puppies
  • Give vaccines if the animal does not appear to have been well cared for otherwise wait until you determine no owner can be found.
  • Isolate the animal from your other pets for 7 days to determine if any health issues arise.
  • Follow veterinary advise on care and feeding especially with a sickly rescue

No Owner Found? – check with the shelters if space is available.
All of the shelters will welcome financial support for your rescue

  • Take photos and post on Social Media—primarily FaceBook on the groups mentioned on our resources page. In your post, includes some pictures, (especially a good face picture) and a body picture to indicate the size of the cat or dog. Try and get down to the animals level or bring it up to your level to get good pictures. A picture of the back of their head or in a dark room will not help get the animal a home. Please also include the location (municipality and cross streets) where you found the animal.

First, keep calm. Contact one of the Ecology departments or local rescue groups. They can guide you on safely handling the animal and provide the care it needs. It’s crucial to minimize stress for the animal, so try to keep it warm and quiet .While waiting for help, avoid giving the animal food or water since it could worsen injuries. If safe to do so, gently place the animal in a secure, ventilated box or carrier. Keep it away from pets and noise. Remember, professionals can give the best care, so your main goal is to get the animal to them quickly.
